At 25 beds, Allen County Regional Hospital is small.  But the critical access hospital in rural southeastern Kansas is making big strides in boosting employee health.  Hear how this hospital partnered with Interactive Health to overcome an early barrier to implementing the wellness program and their ongoing efforts to improve employee health.

Allen County Regional Hospital’s Journey

An early barrier to implementing the wellness program was the absence of a local laboratory to process biometric screening tests, including blood tests for diabetes and high cholesterol.  To address this challenge, Interactive Health helped set up a laboratory at the hospital’s outpatient clinic.  The hospital also made the lab available to other area employers for wellness screenings to bring in additional revenue.

Since launching the comprehensive wellness program with Interactive Health in 2014, employees’ risk of heart disease and other serious conditions has declined.  In 2017, 80% of participants with moderate health risk moved to low risk over that year and 50% of participants with high risk moved to moderate or low risk over the same time-period.

These major accomplishments translate into meaningful returns on investment. In fact, for every $1 that Allen County Regional Hospital spends on the wellness program, it is avoiding an estimated $4.76 in health benefit-related costs.  Patients are also benefiting.  “Happy and engaged employees translate to high patient satisfaction”, says CEO Marion “Tony” Thompson, FACHE.

The hospital’s commitment to wellness is partially a reflection of the culture that exists in the community it serves.  Allen County is a 2017 recipient of RWFJ Culture of Health Prize from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.  Community leaders and members have come together to achieve several health achievements including the development of 25 miles of biking and hiking trails.
